We call it Bible Study, but it’s really the adventure of theology. I think theological reflection should be a joy, and I’m not sure the Church has always made it so for many people! Learning who God is, what God has already done for us, and what God wants for us is a joy that can’t be surpassed. And also just happens to be perfectly comforting, if you stick with it. Theological reflection is our attempt to remain faithful to what God has revealed about who God is and how God loves us.
And so most of our time in these get togethers is spent in “Bible Study”, reading and discussing God’s Word, which is God’s self-revelation. What a joy! How can the Holy Scriptures be anything but beautiful and good when they are the words of our Lord Jesus – who is the Way, the Truth, and the Life?
Sometimes we take a break from Scripture, per se, to talk about specific topics of interest to the group, including history and theology and literature and music and baked goods (we had some really great Hamantaschen not too long ago!). And sometimes we follow rabbit trails that wander far afield from an original topic. Still, the interconnectedness of all things to God and God’s Word always shines through.
Come join us as we partake of the joy and delight that accompanies learning about our God!
St. John’s Grace invites you to join us on Sunday mornings at 10:00 for Adult Church School!
Geared for ages twelve and up, St. John’s Grace’s Adult Church School continues on Sunday mornings at 10:00 a.m. Now that the Easter Season is almost over, our introduction to the ‘Minor Prophets’ is also coming to a close. After Pentecost, we’ll be doing some Comparative Religion studies for a few weeks. The topics for each week, along with any suggested readings, will be announced in class every Sunday, and in a broadcast email during the week. Meetings last about 45 minutes, so you will have plenty of time to get ready for Sunday worship at 11:00.
Wednesday evening Bible Study meets at 6:30 in the Meeting Room. (And Zoom.)
Wednesday evening Bible Study is the opportunity to explore, discuss, and wrestle with the scriptures. We are currently doing a deep dive into the Book of Genesis. Approximately 45 minutes of delving into this seminal book, learning of God’s creative AND redemptive work. If you attend in-person, you may also want to be a part of our prayer service in the sanctuary that follows after the class. If you can’t make it to the church, you’re welcome to join via the Zoom link on this and other pages of our website.
For both Sunday and Wednesday classes, we’re always looking forward to seeing everyone again and learning from everyone. No experience necessary – newbies are welcome and encouraged! No church membership or any other affiliation required, either! All you need is a willingness to wrestle with the text. ALL ARE WELCOME!
There is a third chance to dive into God’s word – Wednesdays at 1:00 p.m. This class is held in the Activity Room at Brightview Catonsville, right next door to the church. We are currently doing an exploration of the narrative books of the Bible. All are welcome!
Feel free to call or email Rev. David at the church office if you have any questions or comments about the studies.
